Shopping centre launches campaign to encourage people of Peterlee to take control of their health and wellbeing through series of pop-up events

Efforts to improve poor health in Peterlee are being taken by a community shopping centre by hosting two weeks of pop-up health events.

Castle Dene Shopping Centre has partnered with several organisations on the ‘Health is Wealth’ campaign, including Be Clear on Cancer, Stop Smoking, Alzheimers’ Society, Well Being for Life, Solutions 4 Health and East Durham Trust, to name a few.

According to research, the percentage of residents in Peterlee rating their health as ‘poor’ (10.6%) is more than the national average.

The events, which will run from January 18 to February 1, aim to encourage people to take more control of their own health and wellbeing through free support and advice sessions to also help tackle the rising issue of people suffering in silence.

Suzanne Chaney, centre manager, said: “January is the perfect time for us to be launching Castle Dene’s first ever health campaign as people are often feeling sluggish and unhealthy after the festive period.

“Seeking help from health care professionals can often be a very daunting experience for some and these casual drop-in sessions make advice and support a lot more accessible.

“Whether you want help quitting smoking or you are looking for carers support we are covering a range of issues, so I would encourage anyone looking to take charge of their health and wellbeing in 2019 to come along to one of the events.”

A ‘Health is Wealth’ table will be located on the lower ground of The Chare, at Castle Dene, where there will be a different organisation each day providing information about various health care issues.
