Families in Peterlee were treated to a fang-tastic Halloween last week, with Castle Dene’s Shopping Centre’s array of spooky activity.

Discovery Zoo spooked the kids on Freaky Friday 27th October, with their scary and strange creatures. Beasts including the Caroliner Rat Snake, Giant African Millipede and Death’s Head Cockroach were showcased throughout the day.

Kick-starting Saturday’s celebrations, face painters transformed children into wicked witches, plump pumpkins and silly skeletons.

Youngsters enjoyed taking part in creepy arts and crafts, Halloween lantern and hat making, face painting, a fancy dress parade and more. Locals even got the chance to meet Castle Dene’s very own walk about wizard, who amazed the kids with his best spells and tricks.

To round off the day, local Cllr. Audrey Laing was on hand to judge the frightful fancy dress parade. Kids of all ages were invited to take part in the competition, for the chance to win a £50.00 voucher to spend at Castle Dene.

Claire Malcom, who dressed as a scary witch, was selected as the centre’s winner. Cllr. Laing praised her for making an outstanding effort with her Halloween make-up and costume.

With Halloween just round the corner, Sunday’s visitors got stuck in to the spooky spirit by taking part in yet more arts and crafts and colouring in activities.

Local Cllr. Laing, said: “The Halloween celebrations at Castle Dene were absolutely fantastic and it was a real honour to be part of such a lovely community event. It was difficult to judge the best costume, as all of the children went to a real effort, however Claire really stood out and was the clear winner.”

“I look forward to working with Castle Dene in the future for more Peterlee events and projects.”
